About Ted Griffiths
I graduated from Sheffield University with a degree
in Biochemistry in 1970 followed by a PhD at the University
of Warwick. My area of research investigated mutations
in the mitochondrial DNA of yeast which gave rise to
antibiotic resistance. I undertook research both in
the USA and the UK but felt my most rewarding work
was teaching secondary school students both in the
USA and the UK. I decided to undertake a Post-Graduate
Certificate in Education at Bangor University where
I could indulge in my real passion, rock climbing.
After several more very happy years teaching, the opportunity
to put my experience in biomedical research and teaching
to further use arose and I moved on to my present position.
For the past seven years I have been Director of The
Biomedical Research Education Trust (BRET). The trust
is a charity whose main purpose is to provide speakers
and produce and distribute leaflets and videos explaining
the responsible and humane use of animals in biomedical
research. Many research scientists and laboratory animal
technicians are keen to talk to members of the public
about the work they do with research animals. BRET
runs speaker training workshops and produces materials
to assist these volunteer speakers in making their
presentations relevant, informative and engaging.
