Funded
by Sport England, Sporting Equals is a national initiative
working to promote racial equality in sport throughout
England.
It was established in 1998 as a partnership
between Sport England and the Commission for Racial
Equality. Ethnic minorities are poorly represented
at decision making levels in most sports. They find
themselves excluded from various sports facilities,
and overlooked by sports development officers and coaches.
In
August 1999, a survey by Sporting Equals of 62 governing
bodies in sport found that they needed more guidance,
support and information to help them address racial
equality issues within their sport.
"Too many governing bodies regard equality
management not as an integral part of the process,
but as an unwelcome additional burden the ongoing challenge
is convincing governing bodies to think of racial equality
as an integral component of their strategic planning
and development."
Findings from the Racial Equality Survey of NGBs, Sporting Equals, 1999
Sporting Equals works with the governing bodies of various sports and with key
national umbrella organisations to develop policies and working practices that
promote racial equality. Commitment to racial equality in sport has clear
social, economic and commercial benefits. It will encourage more people from
all ethnic backgrounds to take part in sport, and it will lead to fairer, more
diverse representation at all levels in coaching and in the administration and
management of sports.
