'Many pupils who usually wouldn’t contribute in science lessons, felt confident enough to participate in the debate. The quality of their responses showed they really understood the issue from watching the play."
Nicola Goddard, Biology teacher,Queens College
"I have never really taken much interest in the news, or the NHS, (which is surprising as I want to be a doctor when I am older) I always found it boring and uninteresting, but the Breathing Country drama workshop really enlightened me about how I want things to be (medically) for my future and how things should/ideally would be run."
Student, La Sainte Union Secondary school.
' Breathing Country' is a new Theatre of Debate® play by award-winning
playwright Ben Musgrave, which aims to explore the
issues raised
by the use of electronic patient records in medical research.
The production has been developed in partnership with
the Royal Academy of Engineering(RAEng)
and is supported by the Wellcome Trust and Central YMCA.
'Breathing Country' will tour schools, community centres and health care practices throughout London in Autumn 2009 and will tour nationally in Spring 2010.
'Breathing Country' is targeted at students at
KS4 and above (aged 14+).
'Breathing Country' throws open the questions of privacy, security and the greater good. Each performance will be followed by a live debate,
utilising electronic voting technology, during which
the students will be encouraged to explore what they
think and feel about the issues posed by the drama.
The production is accompanied
by a suite of online support materials which will engage
directly with science and humanities specifications.
